What “Class 4” actually means
The UL 2218 standard tests roofing products by dropping a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet. Class 4 shingles withstand that impact without cracking. Standard shingles don't.
Class 4 is the highest UL 2218 impact-resistance rating. It can reduce the likelihood of functional damage, but no asphalt shingle is hail-proof. Actual performance depends on hail size, wind speed, roof age, installation quality, and the specific product's construction.
